English

Coastal bay is one of the coastal landforms which is a semi-enclosed area of seawater that is often formed by effect of sea currents on erosive or sedimentary coasts. It can be a proper habitat for organisms for feeding, growth and reproduction if the conditions are suitable. According to the biological and ecological importance of coastal bays as well as the importance of study of coastal landforms in integrated thinking in coastal zone management, this survey was conducted with the aim of identiying and validating coastal bays as one of the landforms in the country's coastal areas, so that by recognizing these sensitive and important zones, better planning and management can be applied with full awareness, and future environmental problems can be prevented. This process was carried out along the northern and southern coastlines using satellite imagery from Google Earth, in accordance with the method of the United Nations Convension on the Law of the Sea. Results showed that seven coastal bays can be identified in the country: Gorgan Bay, Gwatr Bay, Chabahar Bay, Pozm Bay, Nayband Bay, Bushehr Bay and Musa Bay, two of which, including Bushehr Bay and Musa Bay, have not been identified and introduced so far. A bay is being formed at the western part of Jask in the future. coastal bays in Iran include bays near the headland, bays near the spit, as well as young bays near the spit. The findings highlight the considerable importance of these semi-enclosed water bodies in terms of their physical structure, and given their potential role in biological organization and ecosystem services—the assessment of which requires independent research—the need to pay attention to these landforms in integrated coastal zone management is further emphasized.
