Coastal wetlands, as transitional ecosystems, provide a wide range of ecosystem services, particularly in supporting livelihood opportunities. However, these areas are continuously being degraded worldwide due to the development of human activities. The conversion and loss of coastal wetlands to agricultural, urban and industrial lands has had significant impacts on the population and diversity of waterbirds, while these species rely on wetlands for part of their life cycle. As a result, wetlands and their wildlife are considered as one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. Kiashahr lagoon is part of the international Boujagh wetland which is classified as a coastal-marine wetland. This lagoon, due to meeting criteria 1, 2, 4, and 6 of the Ramsar Convention, was registered in the Ramsar Wetlands List in 1975 with an area of 500 hectares. This area is also considered as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and one of the Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSA). The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental characteristics of Bandar Kiashahr lagoon. The findings of this study can help stakeholders in creating opportunities for further conservation of this coastal ecosystem.
